A profession is something that you learned and you are specialised in. In most cases it is an academic way of life. So you first do a general study in a subject like law, journalism, languages or sciences. After your diplom or exam you can do a master or a bachelor on top to have more knowledge in your subject and have more chances on the market. Also you have the possibility to promovate and have a doctortitel. In some studies like medicine it is even part of the general studies to write a dissertation. You write it in cooperation with your mentor who has to be a professor at a university. Depending on the subject it can take you three to five years.
