Money, responsibility, success? What do you want?

The word career may mean totally different things to different people, so to make one’s career may be a very personal and individual path to follow. To some, planning their career and not looking left or right until they have reached their goal is the right thing to do, and the result is called having built a career. Other people follow their heart, their instincts, and this might mean that they take a “zig-zag” kind of road, which to outsiders may seem a bit lacking in coherence. This simply shows that there is no such thing as THE career, the one road. Being satisfied with what you do, putting your talents or your empathy to work, a job that is never boring, all this may be meant by “career”.

To make one’s career often has to do with knowing what is precisely the right thing for you. But this is difficult if the first steps have to be taken at the tender age of 16 or 19. A lot of people that age are still in their personal processes, they have a vague idea of what they want, but not necessarily a detailed career path in mind – unless they are influenced by adults, teachers or parents. But of course, this is often the impetus to study this subject or do that training. To make one`s career is more of a “super” goal, which keeps the person going. Yet, it`s still a question of what precisely is a career. Earning pots of money or enjoying each day of your professional life?

Money is important, and a person who gets underpaid at the same being overloaded with responsiblity or hard work, will end up all frustrated. But if money is less relevant because a person lives a fairly modest life, the chances are quite good that he will find just the right thing that fulfills his wishes. This may be anything, really: running a small shop, dancing, working with handicapped children, teaching one`s favourite subject. There is a career in it!
